We were diving under Rye Pier checking out the Spider Crabs on Thursday 4 June late afternoon. We had moved out from under the pier to approx 15m north of the pier in about 6m of water taking photos of the Spider Crabs. Out of the corner of my eye I spotted this 7 Gill Shark approach us and swim past. I had my camera ready and took some pics as it swam past my partner Marcia Riederer. It passed another diver who was in a prone stretched out position taking photos of the crabs and the Shark was longer than him - I estimated it was about 2.5 to 3m long from tip of tail to head. The shark was very calm and so graceful swimming past us that I wasn’t concerned about it for a few minutes and we continued taking pics. Then you start thinking about the shark and what if scenarios until other divers in our group came over and we all decided to make a hasty exit. PT Hirschfield was in our group and the shark had headed straight for her and she had to fend it off with her camera. We weren’t sure what type of shark it was until we checked the photos to confirm it was a 7 Gill Shark. Photo taken with Sony NEX 7 with 16mm lens with fisheye convertor in a Nauticam housing with 2 x Inon Strobes.
